Judge:  Paul Garland (NZ) 

Paul has over 30 years experience in the husbandry and breeding of alpacas and llamas (plus Vicuna and Guanaco), through his extensive professional career in zoos and the international conservation field. He was the Director of Orana Park Wildlife Reserve in Christchurch, New Zealand for 21 years, heading a program that established many endangered species breeding projects.  In 1995 he received the Queens Service Medal (QSM) for his work in support of conservation.  


He was a founding member of the Alpaca and Llama Association of New Zealand (ALANZ which was established in 1989), serving in several official positions over the years. He is an active member of the New Zealand Alpaca Association (AANZ), currently serving on the association’s show and judging subcommittee. Paul was made a Life Member of the AANZ in 2009 and continues to actively contribute to the New Zealand alpaca industry.

Paul has been a qualified New Zealand alpaca judge since 1999 and a llama judge since 1993. He has trained alongside some of the world’s best alpaca judges and has attended alpaca and llama shows in USA, Canada, Australia, England, Germany, Peru and many other countries. He has visited South America on a number of occasions to select alpacas for export, and in 2006 had the honour of being the first outside alpaca and llama judge to judge at a major Agricultural & Pastoral Show in Peru. He has judged at National Alpaca Shows in both New Zealand and Australia.

Paul has a great passion for the future of alpaca breeding and is always keen to share this enthusiasm with others.

Judge:  Dean Ford (NZ) 

Dean, former owner and operator at Vista Del Sud (sood) alpaca stud in North East Victoria, Australia now lives in Karaka on the north island in New Zealand.


Coupled with working fulltime in Biosecurity, Dean assists operate the farm at Waters Edge alpacas with Toni, Greg and his Fiancé Lisa Charteris. We are focused on breeding elite grey Huacaya stud stock for the local and European market with a herd of approximately 150 Huacaya.

Dean is committed to the alpaca industry, having undertaken various volunteer leadership roles for the AAA including past President of Victorian Central Region (VCR) and convenor of Colourbration in Bendigo Australia’s largest alpaca show.

In early 2015 Dean completed his AAA judging apprenticeship and loves being able to contribute to the future of our stud stock industry.

Dean has a passion for fibre handling and classing wool, having successfully completed his professional Wool Classer certificate in 2012 to become a registered wool classer with AWEX. From time to time he helps classing at some local Merino studs. In 2013 Dean assisted pilot the alpaca fibre classing within the TAFE system and successfully completed the national curriculum for classing of alpaca fibre.
